What is Collins trying to say with this poem? That after childhood you have nothhing. How does he capture childhood and the process of growing up? Childhood the best time of your life and once you start growing up you will start becoming depressed. What makes this poem effective? All the description and detail of what you do as a child and how you thought as a child. how does this fit into your own life experience? My childhood was amazing and so much fun but I am also looking forward to the future and I love the place where I am now.

definition
Beauty is not what you are born with, but what you can do to yourself to look more appealing. Beauty is not skin deep or in your skin at all, it is what you put on top of your skin.
Denial is what a person has when they do not agree with common culture. Denial is frowned upon and isn't something a person should want.
Evil is everywhere and everyone. It is constantly spreading its negative attitude on life. Evil people are those who seem kind but go across seas to kill others they dont agree with.

Are there any fresh ideas enlisted in this definition? How would you have defined this idea? Are there ideas similar to it that you could choose to define? Yes the idea that a yankee is kind has never occered to me. I'm not sure how I would have defined this idea but it would have gone along with the idea of the baseball team.
There are allusions here: (1) to the musical Damn Yankees!, (2) to the Bible (the parable of the Good Samaritan), and (3) to a poem by Robert Frost. Do these allusions add anything to the essay or to your understanding of things? What if you didn't "get" the allusions? If somebody were to able to understand these allusions, they are now able to look up all three and get a better understanding of what the writter means.

What techniques of development does the essay use in the process of definition? Do you think the writer dwelt too long on what a Yankee is not before moving on to what a Yankee is? No I do not think the writer dwelt too long on what a Yankee is not because sometimes the best way to describe something, is to describe what it isn't.
Can you point to (write down) one sentence that functions as thesis statement in this essay?
That's what I think defines this dying breed of the American Yankee: an extraordinary sense of balance and reserve, a holding off — and yet, behind all that reserve, a reservoir of generosity and friendliness that can be nearly overwhelming.
spring break
Over spring break I went on a cruise! I went with my best friend Moran. The cruise went to Florida and the Bahamas. I met many interesting people on the boat and ate lots of interesting food. The downfall of the trip was when I got sick. I thought I had food poisoning but then realized I had the flu. I really hated staying on the boat while everyone else got to go to the beach and lay in the sun.
Since I had a two week spring break, my second week was spent sleeping in. Every morning I woke up around noon. Although I had scheduled dance classes every day of the week, I still managed to find time to spend with friends and also find a job! My brother is a manager of the subway on Polaris and he was able to get me a job. This spring break I learned all the special ways to make the different types of subs. Overall it was a great spring break full of relaxation, working, and spending time with my brother.

1. “A Modest Proposal” is an ironic essay: the author deliberately writes what he does not mean. What is the real thesis? Is there more than one?
The real thesis is the people saying to England and the kingdom that you oppress us so much that we might as well eat our children
2. Look closely at paragraphs 4, 6, and 7, and study how the appeals to logic are put in mathematical and economic terms. Underline those words and phrases.
am assured by our merchants, that a boy or a girl before twelve years old is no salable commodity; and even when they come to this age they will not yield above three pounds, or three pounds and half-a-crown at most on the exchange; which cannot turn to account either to the parents or kingdom, the charge of nutriment and rags having been at least four times that value.
3. When does the reader begin to realize that the essay is ironic? Before or after the actual proposal is made in paragraph 10?
Before. When the author talks about the children in paragraph 4
4. Which groups of people are singled out as special targets for Swifts’ attack? Are the Irish presented completely as victims, or are they also to blame?
I believe that the rulers are to blame and the Irish people are not to blame.
5. Does the essay merely function as a satirical attack? Does Swift ever present any serious proposals for improving conditions? If so, where?
5. Does the essay merely function as a satirical attack? Does Swift ever present any serious proposals for improving conditions? If so, where?
No i didn't find any improving conditions
6. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
6. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
To show that he isn't doing this for himself but for others.
7. The character proposing the measure uses various techniques to convince. These include statistics and appeals to the authority of prominent figures. Can you spot any others? Have you done any sort of "labor" job? Did you resist your employer and, if you did, what forms did your resistance take? Is there a strong link between humor, anger, or other emotional states and resistance? Can you give examples of things you did to vent frustration (particularly if they were funny?)
In paragraph six the author is giving facts about children and how much they weigh and how great of a meal they would make. Yes I have done a labor job. I never resisted my employer because I didn't want to lose my job. there is a strong link to all of these emotions and resistance. You can resist your employer by making jokes about how you really feel just to lighten the mood but also have a real message to tell him.
8. If you were, conversely, given the job of marketing babies, do you think it could be done, and how? We have a tradition, in English, of keeping the French names for the meats of animals eaten primarily by the rich. Would the first step be calling baby meat something French? Would it be by processing the baby to the point of non-recognition?
Ew. No we could never ever sell children.

i want a wife
1. Does this essay have an explicitly stated thesis? If so, what is it? If you believe the thesis is implied, paraphrase it in your own words.
I want a wife that way life is easier.
2. Throughout the essay, Brady repeats the words “I want a wife.” What is the effect of this repetition?
Stressing how its always the wife that does the duties, not the spouse but always the wife.
Brady does not actually want a wife. She wrote this essay to show how much she does and says she wants a wife just so she can give her duties to someone else.
4. How does Brady define what it means to be a “wife”? How does she organize the many services a wife provides her husband and family? What do you think of Brady’s characterization of a wife and her responsibilities? How do you think she wants her readers to respond to this characterization? Why?
She defines wife as somebody who cooks, cleans, mends, takes care of the children and her husband. A wife who does everything that way the husband can focus on work. I believe she wants the readers to respond to this characterization by realizing that the work should be split up equally betweent he husband and the wife. She wants to be able to go back to school and get a higher education and work just like her husband.

actually exist? Explain why you think Brady wrote this essay.

5. Write a letter to Brady responding to “I Want a Wife.” Let her know what you admire or don’t admire about the essay and the extent to which you consider it effective and/or persuasive.
Dear Brady,
Your essay was very funny to me. I understand that you were feeling that way but in the year 2012, we have many stay at home fathers. The jobs are split up equally and the fathers show just as much affection to the children as the mothers do. This may come to a shock to you but I would much rather stay at home with children than go to school. No, I wouldnt want to have to always be home cleaning and cooking and entertaining but I would rather spend time with my children than have my husband do it. Times have changed in this world.

Tell me why you liked them. Were they similar to other stories you've heard? Did Thurber surprise you in any way? How does he use satire (mocking or making fun of something else) in the story?
the little girl and the wolf
I liked this story because it made the girl sound a lot smarter than the original. He surprised me when the girl pulled out a gun because its so different from the first. He mocks the story by stating the moral that girls can't be fooled as easily.
The bear
This story was not like any story I have ever heard so I enjoyed it. Thurber surprised me by basically saying its fine to drink cause you're going to look stupid anyways.
The Fox and the Crow
I had heard a story like this before but never really understood the moral. I like this story because Thurber surprised me by making not about the sneakiest animal but who was arrogant . I believe that's how he made fun of the original

Fairytales
The Lion in Love
-The lion is in love and asks the parents for her hand in marriage but they want him to take out his teether and claws and he does
-Love can tame the wildest
The Man and His Two Wives
-The man has two wives, the first one picks out his grey hairs and the second picks out his black hairs untill he has no hair left.
-Yield to all and you will soon have nothing to yield
The Monkey and the Dolphin
Monkey is brought to land by a doliphin while telling lies the whole wa, the dolphin drwons him
He who once begins to tell falsehoods is obliged to tell others to make them appear true, and, sooner or later, they will get him into trouble.
As a lion is dying all the other animals come up and hurt him to pay off old grudges
Only cowards insult dying majesty
The eagle and the Arrow
An eagle is hurt with an arrow that has a eagle feather on it
We often give our enemies the means for our own destruction.
Belling the Cat
A mouse comes up wih an idea to bell a cat that way they always know where she is
It is easy to propose impossible remedies
The lion and the mouse
A mouse promises to help the lion out if he doesnt eat him and so when the lion is tied up the mouse saves him.
Little friends may prove great friends
The ant and the grasshopper
The ant prepares for winter while the grasshopper sings and once winter comes the grasshopper has no food
It is best to prepare for the days of necessity
The cat Maiden
Venus changes a cat into a maiden to prove that people can change and Jupitar lets go a mouse and the maiden chases after it
Nature will out
The dog and the wolf
The dog says he has a better life with always having food but the wolf notices that the dog has a large spot on his neck where is collar chaves him
Better starve free than be a fat slave

Fairy Tail Poem
What an annoying little mouse I think to myself
Stop staring at me like this like I’m your equal
I know I shouldn't be thinking this way but man is he ugly!
you would think that such a rich man could afford some plastic surgery
Why would you ever want to have to walk everywhere
I say that I change into a merman and we live under the sea
Your loud annying music is making want to punch something
Go away because we dont like your kind in the first place
This damn cat is always trying to get me into trouble
Some day I will drop kick it
Oh dear I really should make my grandaughter some new clothes
That red hood is getting kinda old
I am a wealthy young girl
Why am I hanging out with a crazy rabbit and a insane little man
I am sufficating you know!
Somebody get me out of here
I hate my skin! i run around outside all day and still not tan!
Does anybody know a quality spray tanning system
Poem
I'm gonna get made fun of again I know it
The boys are going to say "Why do you always hangout with a girl?"
Ill tell you why! Because I am in love you idiots!
But this always happens
The girl always falls for tall dark and handsome
She would never go for yellow, cold and smells like salt water
Although I get lucky and she kisses me often
I know it means nothing more than just friends
Maybe some day I'll find my princess
I should really look into one of her sisters

Happy Valentines Day!!!!!!
On this day where everything is pink and red
Lovers are sharing affection and hugs
I would like to thank my great friend instead
She has my back like a big heavy shrug
Through boyfriends and tears she is always there
With a big tub of ice cream and movies
Although we are different nothing will tear
Our friendship is full of laughter and tease
So on this great day full of hearts and love
With flowers and chocolate for everyone
I would like to thank the big man above
For Morgan and warmth like the big bright sun
Happy Valentines Day to you my pair
And all of the fabulous times we share

I really enjoyed reading Pennies from Heaven. I have heard of other people finding different symbols that they believe represent loved ones. Having lost many loved ones in my life I have been trying to find my own symbol for a very long time but still haven't found it. This story gives me hope that maybe I will find one someday.
I am Still the Greatest was an uplifting story. Although Ali is struggling with a terrible disease he can still think to himself that he is the best and nobody can take that away from him. In times of doubt I will think back on his story and think to myself that I am the greatest and nobody can take what I deserve away from me.
I Believe in the car Radio was a great story. I agree with it 100%. Anytime I am down and a new song comes on the radio, I think about a small memory that the song brings and it always makes me feel better.
The Power of Hello opened my eyes. I never thought of the idea that everyone deserves some sort of acknowledgement. I got alot out of this story. From now on I'm going to try my best to say hello to everyone I encounter.

I am walking to my dreaded school, the howling wind is whiping across my face. The moist, dark pavement is leading me to my doom. Walking past the elementary school, I see the ostentatious mothers opening up the automatic mini van doors and letting their children out. Not even saying goodbye, they close the doors while still texting on their blackberrys. "How life would be, not even kissing your mother goodbye for the day." I am wondering. What is a childhood at all without comfort, affection and love? I am continuing to walk to my class, walking past all the unfamiliar faces in the hallway. Half way there I stop at the Splendid school news board to see what was going on in school life. Roughly glancing at everything on the board until something catches my eye, the school dance is coming up and I do not have a date yet. What am I going to do? the clock is ticking down hour by hour losing time to ask the one. I notice there was fungus spewing out of my teachers arms like a volcano. I recomend my teacher a washcloth, hot water and some soap to get rid of the smell that fills the room like a spilled trash bag. She is giving me detention for a week and I am not allowed to go to the dance. "At least I don't have to worry about asking someone now" I mumble. I walk in the breakfast room to get a scrumptious blueberry muffin like always and find my friends sitting at the table in the corner. They ask me how my detention was and if I could still go to the dance. I tell them what happened and how I am not allowed to go to the dance, they nearly attack me like vicious dogs, because they all knew how much I wanted to go with RuMeal. I nearly have a heart spasm from all their questions. Although I am not able to go to the dance I spend a fantastic night with my family watching movies.

. What are the strengths of your partner’s essay? Why?
His opening paragraph was really strong because it made me interested and want to keep reading
He didn't have any
4. What is the part of the paper that stands out as the most "catchy" or important?
The whole thing was very important. What he learned from the experience stood out the most to me.

2. What areas could use improvements? In other words, what suggestions can you give
your partner that will help his/her paper improve?
He had a few run on sentences. I would try and keep those to a minimal

1. What did you think of this narrative?
I thought it was really interesting how she was taught words. Its hard to believe that people don't realize that words go wtih objects naturally.
2. What was most interesting or engaging about it?
how it took her awhile to realize that w-a-t-e-r meant the cold misty feeling she felt running her hand under water
3. What surprised you?
That her teacher was so patient with her because I would have a hard time staying calm and not yelling.
4. Did this change your outlook on Helen Keller at all? Why or why not?
This did not change my outlook on Helen Keller. I knew she had faced many hardships with her disabilities and this passage just made it even more clear how hard life was for her.
5. Copy and paste three examples of vivid detail and imagery that helped enhance the story
1.As the cool stream gushed over one hand she spelled into the other the word water
2. The afternoon sun penetrated the mass of honeysuckle that covered the porch, and fell on my upturned face.
3.My fingers lingered almost unconsciously on the familiar leaves and blossoms which had just come forth to greet the sweet southern spring
6. How can a narrative be more engaging than something like a biography? Why is it important to get someone's personal perspective?
A narrative can give you their opinions in more detail. It puts the reader in their shoes and makes you feel as if you are there right next to Helen Keller experiencing these things.
7. Make a bulltted lists of some things you could write a narrative about
My companys dance concert (warming up)
an exciting swim meet
getting a puppy
coming to high school
auditoning for OSU dance program
riding the top thrill dragster

Where I'm From
I am from comfort and music.
I am from arrow heads and horns,
from scraped knees and red rover.
I am from the pitch black night and glowing fireflies.
I am from bleach blonde babies, kisses and giggles.
I am from frustration, exploding powder, and thanksgiving.
I am from fudge , coffee and drawn out telephone calls.
From aces and note cards.
I am from getting babysat by smoggy blue natatoriums that
felt peaceful and loving.
I’m from magic cats and tea parties.
From plastic and Velcro, to confidence and pictures.
I am from lane lines, thermometers, blue ribbons, and buzzers
I am from garages with speakers that yell and correct
I am from closets stuffed full of leotards and gossip
I am from the heat on stage and the chilling early rehearsals.
I am from twinkling Christmas lights on the street
I am from “lost” with friends
I’m from buckeye blitz and caramel
I am from silver rings and a pink purse
I am from 4 women who shaped me
